Q: What is the dog surrendering process?

April 2021 UPDATE : While we are still accepting private surrenders, we are at capacity. Depending on you location in the country it can take 1 week to 3 months to find a foster home if your dog is accepted into the rescue. Surrendering a dog to us takes time. During Fall & Winter months this time is usually 4-8 weeks. While in the Spring & Summer months, it’s usually 2-4 weeks. All dogs adopted out by CCR must be spayed/ neutered. If your dog isn't, CCR asks that you make a donation towards this procedure. It usually runs $100-150. Any donation amount accepted. Dog must also be up-to-date on vaccinations). After the initial application is submitted and goes through initial approval, CCR will verify the vetting so we can determine what is needed tor proper placement. We will then have a volunteer that has experience with the breed, meet the dog to determine the best foster placement. Question 2

I need to surrender my dog ASAP, what do I need to do?

Cane Corso Rescue, Inc. should not be used as a last resort. Surrendering a dog to us takes time. Once the application for surrender has gone through the initial approval process, we must have a volunteer evaluate the dog, secure a foster home and setup a transport for the dog.

How much is the adoption donation?

Question 5

Where are you located?

We are a national foster rescue. That means we do not have a single central location where all our dogs are kept. Instead, our dogs are in private foster homes all across the nation. We can transport a dog to another state if needed using a volunteer transportation network after approved for adoption.

Question 6

What is the process of adopting and getting the dog to me?

After submission of you application. A volunteer will process your application & be in contact with you. (read more about the time is takes here) Once you get through the initial application approval, you will have an interview with a Cane Corso Rescue, Inc. board member via phone or video chat. During this interview the board member will discuss the dogs available that would best matched with your family including any dogs you are interested in. There is a possibility at this stage that the dog you were initially interested may have been adopted or would not fit into your family and thusly the option to adopt another dog will be discussed or, if you wish, be put on a waitlist for a puppy.

The next step in the process is a home visit in which a CCR certified volunteer would visit the home and your family. This is to help with getting the dog prepared for your home. The volunteer will let us know of any concerns and we will help you correct anything before the dog placement.

Once this is done and we are ready to setup a transport of the dog to you, the adoption contract will be sent out for you to complete & eSign. The adoption donation must be paid in full or a payment plan must be setup and approved by a CCR board member.

A transport is then setup using a volunteer network to get the dog to you. We hope that you are willing to take part in the transport as sometimes the longer, cross-country trips can be difficult to coordinate.

Once you get your new dog into your home, make sure to read over the adoption workbook as this will have a lot of information to help get the dog settled in. We are always here to help and you can reach out to the board member that did your interview if you have any concerns.

Question 7

Are there dogs in _____? Is there a dog close to me?

Due to the nature of our rescue, location isn't an issue. Whether a dog is in the same state as you or across the country. If the dog is matched to you, then a transport is set up to get the dog into your home. Whether the transport is cross country or just in a neighboring city, we require that you be willing to help with the transport.

Question 8

Why will renters be denied?

This is a difficult one for us as we know there are so many families out there that are deserving of a Cane Corso.

The main concern here is the landlord. While a landlord may give initial approval, they can change their mind at any time, requiring the tenant to vacate or get rid of the dog.

Even if you take all the precautions and even get the landlord to give you approval in writing; however, even in doing this, if the landlord gets reports of a “mean looking dog” and is forced to have the dog removed (yes, this has happened several times) you may end up having to give the Corso back to CCR. This in turn can cause undue stress on the dog & the family.

There are a couple of rare exceptions here:

In the event that you have previously adopted from us and are currenlty a renter, please reach out to us via the chat on our website to get pre-approval before filling out the adoption application
If you believe that you have a different case and you can guarantee that the dog will be safe in your home without the possibility of giving up the dog due to threat of eviction or landlord, then please reach out to us on the chat on the site explaining why your situation may be different.

Question 9

How do dog transports work?

Whether the transport is set up for getting a dog into the rescue or transporting the dog into its new home, the transport is coordinated using a volunteer network.

One of board members coordinates the transport by acquiring volunteer transporters via social media and reaching out to other volunteer groups that have large breed experience. The transport is then separated into multiple legs in which a volunteer will either drive one or multiple legs.

There are several things that can delay a transport, but the most common one is the availability of volunteers or a volunteer backing out of a transport leg at last minute.

A tremendous amount of time and energy goes into coordinating a transport, but it's always worth it!

Question 10

Can I talk to someone before adopting or surrendering a dog?

Yes & No. We do not have the personnel resources for someone to speak with you on the phone before filling out an adoption application. Once an adoption applications is submitted a CCR representative will be in contact with you. In addition a CCR board member will be available to you during the approval process to speak with you. If you have questions about a particular dog, we add as much info as we can on the dog's bio page and up date it from time to time.
